The story so far

Many years ago in the city of Silverymoon, in the land of Luruar, a powerful wizard named Thelenna the Wise crafted ten magical rings of significant power under commission of her ruler, the great-great-great grandfather of the late High Lady Alustriel of Silverymoon. They were to be gifts for the rulers of various neighboring cities and kingdoms, including the nearby dwarven settlements, to foster good will and peace. Producing the rings took several years of work and a significant percentage of the kingdom's resources, and when they were finally complete, the king came to inspect the results.

He was in for a surprise, however: the rings were invisible! It turns out that Thelenna the Wise was actually not all that wise after all. She was quite intelligent, and good at her craft, and the rings had all the qualities that had been specified, but she had had the idea that they should also be invisible as a theft prevention feature. The king had intended the rings to be rather a status symbol, so everyone could see and admire them at official diplomatic functions and the like, so his purpose was thwarted by this development. While another set of rings were under construction (by a different wizard), his kingdom was attacked and his palace sacked by one of his irate (and ringless) neighbors.

Over the years, the set of magical rings was broken up and scattered about the land. As you might imagine, it's easy to lose an invisible ring, and one by one, they were misplaced and lost, and their fantastic powers have slipped into myth and legend.

In recent years, the aged Methrammar (son of the late High Lady Alustriel) heads the mutual defense league in the region. However, the dwarves of Adbar, Mithral Hall, and Felbarr have withdrawn, leaving the smaller settlements unprotected. The elf Gaerradh, wife of Methrammar, is under consideration to head the defense league upon the passing of her husband, and she has determined that in order to solidify her bid, she would like to obtain these fabled ten invisible rings, in the hopes that she could bring the dwarves back.

In early 1479 DR, she launched a private project intended to recover as many of these missing rings as can be done. Some magic rituals have been performed which give the general location of some of the rings, and a call for adventurers has been discreetly issued.

Session 1 - Feb 14 2009

  • Ymeir Doppleganger rogue, played by Gavin
  • Amri Genasi swordmage, played by Brinn
  • Darest Elf ranger, played by Tressa

Ymeir and Amri were traveling to Loudwater when they came upon a burning wagon, and a battle in progress between humans and goblins. From the wagon, they rescued an elvish ranger named Darest, who joined them in the battle against the surviving goblins. Darest had been captured by bandits earlier in the day, and those bandits had in turn been ambushed by goblins. Darest was able to use her amazing greatbow to shoot at the goblins from a very long distance. Amri very nearly went down, when she got ahead of the other two, and all the goblins attacked her at once. Her Flame Cyclone ability came in very handy at one point, probably saving her life. Ymeir turned into goblin shape, and tricked the goblins into thinking he was on their side, until he attacked them. They dispatched the goblins, just barely, and found a bunch of silver pieces that they had looted from the human bandits.

  • Darest Elf ranger, played by Tressa

  • Polomolok Gnome (monster), NPC

Ymeir, Amri, and Darest arrived at Loudwater, just as the shopkeepers were closing for the evening. They noticed an odd dagger-like weapon in the window of Garowan's shop. They spent the night in the Green Tankard inn. The next morning, they decided to take a closer look at Garowan's shop, but as they were walking across the south plaza, the wall burst open and goblins attacked. It was a fierce battle, as there were many goblins, and some of them were quite powerful. Ymeir got hexed, so that if he even moved, he would be severely injured. Amri killed a great many of them with her blazing, whirling swordplay, until she went down. Darest picked them off from a distance, with brutal accuracy. She rused to Amri's aid, but was unable to stabilize the dying Genasi right away.

The goblins killed several townsfolk, but some escaped. One of them, a fellow with a withered leg, was injured, but managed to flee anyway. The others stood and fought the goblins; a tiefling warock female named Varest (whose Eldritch Blasts proved very useful!) and a little gnome named Polomolok, whose war pick killed several of the goblins. Polo took some damage before the battle was over, and so did Darest, but nobody as much as Amri. Ymeir used his daggers with great skill, taking down several of the enemy.

At the end of the battle, Darest got Amri stabilized, so she was all right. The guards arrived, and Darest recognized Captain Harrowleaf from her childhood here in Loudwater. He was now the captain of the guards. The group found a scroll on the body of the goblin leader, saying something about a toten that was being sought after in Garowan's shop.

The group then gathered around Varesh and Polo, and began a little conversation.

Session 3 - April 3 2009

  • Amri Genasi swordmage, played by Brinn

A man with a withered leg, named Sunsteen Urbeth, expressed his deep gratitude to Amri and Ymeir for saving his life in the goblin attack. He offered to help the party with anything they needed, but he seems only to have information to give.

Darest was feeling sleepy after the battle, so she went to her room upstairs for the rest of the day, while Amri and Ymeir explored around town a bit. First, they went to Garowan's Curiosities, where they found the Horn Totem on display; it acts as a magical dagger. Garowan asked 520 GP for it, but Ymeir managed to get him to agree to a price of 400 gold. They didn't buy it, yet, they lack the funds. Ymeir suggested that this totem may act as a lure to the goblins of the south, so he fashioned a false replacement of it, and had Garowan hid the real item in the back somewhere. Garowan's good-for-nothing nephew, Zark, was tasked with carving the wood, but he left instead of doing anything.

They asked Garowan about the invisible rings, and learned that he had had one in his shop, until about a month ago, when it was purchased by some adventurers, who then headed out West and haven't been heard from again. They then visited Lady Moonfire in her manor. She was interested in adventuring, and promised the adventurers something later on, some sort of delivery. She hadn't heard of any rings, but she did know of some adventurers who had headed to the west, among whom was a goliath.

Ymeir visited Rivermaster Sarl at the docks, and declined a job offer unloading boats for 6 sp per day. He spoke with Zark, who offered 5 gp for some late-night unloading. Amri visited the temple, where she spoke with Brother Griffon, and Uthgardt. He mentioned that he's usually only around in the early morning and late evening. He said that he had just received a report of some missing villagers at the village of Col Fen, to the west.

He said that he had just received a report of some missing villagers at the village of Col Fen, to the west.

At dinner, they were joined by Darest, Varesh and Polomolok. They decided to head to Col Fen early the next morning and investigate a report of some missing villagers.

That night, Ymeir shifted into Garowan's form, and snuck into his shop, but had to sneak off when he set off an alarm trap.

The next morning, the group set off to Cal Fen, to investigate the missing villagers. On the way, they found the villager who had met them in the inn, he had been killed by something. When the reached the village, they spoke briefly to one of the villagers, who explained the situation. Undead had become restless in the cemetery, and had been attacking the villagers. They went into the cemetery (the gnome and Tiefling went into town instead), and got into a battle with 3 famine hounds, and a decrepit skeleton. It was a rough battle, but they succeeded.

Session 5 - April 5 2009

  • DM: Eric
  • Ymeir Doppleganger rogue, played by Gavin
  • Darest Elf ranger, played by Gavin
  • Amri Genasi swordmage, played by Brinn

After some very helpful healing by a woman from the village, the three adventurers went west, deeper into the cemetery. They heard a scream from the northern of three ancient stone crypts, so then entered there, where they got into a ferocious battle with a pale reaver, three skeletons, and a zombie. After Amri fell in battle, Ymeir lost the will to live, giving himself up for dead. Darest saved the day, however, by defeating two of the undead, causing the reaver to turn insubstantial and flee. She then revived Amri, and they investigated the source of the crying, which was a woman with a baby, who had been held captive by the monsters. She and Darest assisted her back to the village, leaving the miserable Ymeir in his cloud of gloom.

Session 6 - April 22 2009

  • Amri Genasi swordmage, played by Brinn

The villagers offered 50 gp per villager rescued, so Ymeir and Amri headed up to the graveyard, after spending the night in town. They entered a crumbling vault, and fought some ghouls, skeletons, and zombies. Things were not going well! Suddenly, Darest appeared in the doorway, and her arrows soon shifted the tide of battle, and the undead were defeated. They found two of the villagers dead, and rescued another. They also found a silver bowl (worth 30 gp), a ring with an onyx on it (30 gp), and an evil magical onyx skull, which they smashed (yielding a chunk of onyx worth 90 gp). Plus they collected a total of 150 gp in rewards for the rescue of the villagers. Fairly profitable adventuring!

Most importantly, one of the zombies was a goliath who matched the description of a member of a party of adventurers who had headed this way, while in posession of the invisible ring now being sought. They felt the fingers of the zombie corpse, and found it!

Session 7 - June 21 2009

The group left the tiny village of Col Fen, and made their way back to Loudwater. En-route, they met a seemingly friendly fairy dragon named Pico. She led them on a chase through the woods, where they came upon a mysterious little stone box, with a stone sphere inside. Pico said something about this having to do with "Master Vim", who asked a favor of the adventurers: to capture a Kruthik hive lord for him. They were provided with a "Vim sphere", which they were to touch the monster with, and told that there was a lair not far away. The party ventured to the cave, and paused at its dark entrance.

  • Boerym elf druid, played by Gavin
  • Lilli gnome bard, played by Tayla
  • Darest elf ranger, played by Tressa

Lighting a torch, with Lilli holding it, the daring adventurers entered the cave. Inside they fought a terrific battle with hordes of swarming kruthik hatchlings, young, and an adult. Once they defeated the beasts, they found, in the dark recesses at the back of the cave, a swollen hive lord, full of eggs, unable to move or attack. A toss of the sphere, and the fearsome monster was sucked into it. Among the bones, Boerym found a leather bag containing two magical golden bracelets.

  • DM: Eric
  • Emeron human warden, played by Gavin
  • Dawn razorclaw shifter druid, played by Brinn
  • Lilli gnome bard, played by Tayla
  • Darest elf ranger, played by Tressa

The bracelets turned out to be a Bracer of Vitality, and a Fire Bracer. The group waited and rested for a few minutes, then they heard voices, speaking in Goblin. Lilli was telling a joke, and didn't correctly interpret Emeron and Dawn's frantic nudging, so she made some noise (laughed loudly) and the noises stopped. Emeron went sneaking out there to see what was going on, but he didn't have a light source, and stumbled over a pile of rocks, making a lot of noise. Then a bugbear warrior and some goblins attacked, and a ferocious battle raged! Emeron and Dawn both went down during the fight, but Lilli sang healing music, and got them back on their feet, and they went on to be victorious.

XP earned: 125

  • DM: Eric
  • Emeron human warden, played by Gavin
  • Dawn razorclaw shifter druid, played by Brinn
  • Lilli gnome bard, played by Tayla
  • Darest elf ranger, played by Tressa

The group returned to the Vim shrine, and gave the vim sphere back (it went into a magical hole in the large spherical stone). Then they went back to Loudwater, where Darest returned the invisible ring to a courier from Silverymoon, and collected a 200 GP reward.

In the inn, they learned that Curuvar the Brazen, a local wizard, had some information about the Horn Totem. Just then, Curuvan came in, and they got to discuss it with him. Curuvar was interested in the Dire Wood, but the party didn't know anything about that. He did send them on a quest to find the skull totem from the Barrow of the Ogre King, about ten miles to the south, where some goblins were hiding out.

The next morning, the group bought some gear, and headed out. They found a courtyard around the barrow, and Darest triggered a large pit-trap. Then they got into good hiding positions, and ambushed some goblins when they came up to investigate.

XP earned: 318
